In The Blue Zones: The Secret of Living Beyond 100 Years, Dan Buettner explores the lifestyles and habits of people in regions where exceptional longevity is common. These areas, known as Blue Zones, have the highest concentration of centenarians—people who live to 100 years or more.
The next Blue Zone we will explore is Ikaria.
Ikaria (Greece)
Similar to Sardinia, the Italian island, Ikaria is located about 30 miles off the coast of Turkey and features a similarly mountainous landscape. However, the local diet follows a slightly different structure, as illustrated in the figure below.

Ikaria is renowned for its locally produced grape wine, made using traditional methods passed down from Orthodox ancestors. This wine is typically consumed in moderation—one glass (150 ml) per day for women and two glasses (300 ml) for men. This moderate consumption is a key component of the Mediterranean diet, which is associated with numerous health benefits and disease prevention.
Honey has replaced sugar as the primary sweetener in the local diet.
The island also supports a vibrant community engaged in livestock farming, honey production, and agriculture, providing both economic sustainability and food diversity.
The diet is predominantly plant-based, with over 90% of daily intake coming from plant sources.
Community life is rich with nighttime celebrations—lively festivals bring together people of all ages to share food, music, and responsibilities, strengthening social bonds and fostering a deep sense of belonging.
Under the stars, music and laughter fill the air, creating a magical atmosphere that unites generations in joyful celebration.
Goat’s milk is preferred over cow’s milk, as it provides potassium and the stress-relieving amino acid tryptophan. It is also hypoallergenic and generally easier to digest, even for individuals who are lactose intolerant.
These are some other habits identified that has benefitted the community with longevity making them one of the Blue Zones in the world.
Ikaria is the second region and coming weeks we will continue to go through each and every region and the main pillars of a long life exploring and reflecting on their secrets and what we can learn.
Watch this space it might be the most important lesson in all of our lives…
