What is a Blue Zone and where are they located

In The Blue Zones: The Secret of Living Beyond 100 Years, Dan Buettner explores the lifestyles and habits of people in regions where exceptional longevity is common. These areas, known as Blue Zones, have the highest concentration of centenarians—people who live to 100 years or more.

Looking at the map the 5 Blue Zones are located in

  1. Okinawa, Japan – Home to the world’s longest-living women, with a diet rich in vegetables and tofu.
  2. Sardinia, Italy – A region with many male centenarians, known for a plant-based Mediterranean diet and strong family ties.
  3. Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica – High life expectancy due to active lifestyles, a diet of beans and corn, and a strong sense of purpose (“Plan de Vida”).
  4. Icaria, Greece – Known for low rates of chronic disease, thanks to a Mediterranean diet, daily naps, and strong social connections.
  5. Loma Linda, California, USA – A Seventh-day Adventist community that follows a plant-based diet, maintains regular physical activity, and values faith and social networks.
